Emoticons and BEYOND

We all know those cute little computer symbols called "emoticons," where:

:)   means a smile, and
:(   is "sad"or unhappy
Sometimes these are represented by   :-)   and   :-(  

Even though small gif emoticons, e.g., and , have become prevalent in computer email messages, the old typewritten versions are seeing a resurgance with instant messaging and handheld device text messaging.

Not surprisingly, emoticons have also become more sophisticated. For example:

;-)    means a with a "wink" (like a shared secret), or "kidding"
